Workshop on Solid Waste Management by WRI India and MCJ

Date: 19th and 20th November, 2024

As part of the Thriving Eco-City Regions initiative, WRI India hosted a workshop on Solid Waste Management (SWM) in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar (MCJ). With participation from over 250 stakeholders, including health and sanitation officials, safai karamcharis, informal waste workers, and community motivators, the event served as a platform for exploring integrated SWM solutions tailored to Jalandhar.

Sectoral experts from Saahas and Hasiru Dala shared practical, actionable solutions to improve waste management practices and enhance public health outcomes. The workshop, the first event under the newly launched Eco-City Regions Forum, emphasized collaboration and knowledge-sharing to address the growing waste challenges in India.

Key Outcomes from the Workshop:

  • Innovative Safety Gear: The Commissioner of Jalandhar explored new safety equipment for ground-level SWM workers, aimed at significantly improving their health and safety.
  • Rejuvenation of Nurpur Pond: The workshop catalyzed support for cleaning and rejuvenating Nurpur Pond, highlighting the critical link between waste and water management.
