MANTHAN: Informal Settlements Assessment Methods for Jalandhar Fellows

On April 3rd and 4th, 2024, WRI India conducted MANTHAN Session 8.0, providing a platform to discuss structured methods and frameworks for assessing informal settlements in Jalandhar. Led by Paramjeet Chawla, Neha Lal, and Raj Bhagat Palanichamy from WRI India, the session centered around the report titled “The Unseen Lives: Slum Assessment of Jalandhar City”, authored by Mohnish Batra, an Eco City-region fellow in Jalandhar.

The session delved into critical aspects of the report, including:

  • Streamlining the structure and content of the study
  • Using research tools such as indices and questionnaires for better data collection
  • Analyzing the approach taken in the report

This session allowed for in-depth discussions on improving the quality of research and contributing to ongoing urban development efforts in Jalandhar. WRI India team members focused on using diverse data sets to create evaluation frameworks and reduce researcher bias, ensuring a more comprehensive and representative assessment of informal settlements.
